Top SFA vendors for a 250-member salesforce

Liz Roche answers a SearchCRM.com reader's question about the best salesforce automation (SFA) software for a 250-person sales force, and she gives advice and recommendations including Microsoft CRM, NetSuite, Salesforce.com or RightNow.

I've read a lot about the best salesforce automation (SFA) products for midmarket and small businesses. But, what about enterprise organizations? What are the top three best SFA products for a large salesforce (about 250 people)?
The definition of "best" varies from organization to organization, so I'm hard pressed to give you a list of the "best" SFA products for a large sales force without knowing more about your context. However, I will tell you that many of the self-described "midmarket" players place their sweet spots between 40 and 250 users. So you could certainly consider those players, assuming all other things fit. In very broad strokes, I tend to point my clients with salesforces of under 250 users and under to midmarket plays; between 250 and 500 users can be a coin toss between midmarket and enterprise solutions, and anything over 500 is definitely an enterprise play.

SFA vendors you might want to take a look at in the midmarket space include: Microsoft CRM, NetSuite, Salesforce.com...

and RightNow. The enterprise SFA space continues to shape-shift given Oracle's recent acquisitions, but vendors in this space include SAP and Oracle/Siebel.
